4.6 Registrar

The Office of the Registrar is the office that delivers the academic and enrollment information for the students after matriculation. Generally, all of these data can be requested 2 weeks after the end of a given term (e.g. I request them the second week of January for the Fall term records). The timing of these records is important for any kind of early prediction. It is also wise to ask the Office of the Registrar to re-run these files later given the nature of grade changes.

4.6.1 AP/IP Credits

Students may take AP classes and/or participate in IB programs during high school. Wake Forest course credit may be awarded by the Office of the University Registrar based on the scores a student received in these programs.14

Students can claim AP/IB credit at any time prior to graduation, so it is important to have these updated for all students each term by cohort.

This data set contains for each student the number of credit hours and course credits earned though AP/IB Credits.

4.6.5 First Year Seminar/ Writing 111 Scores

Wake Forest students are required to take the First Year Seminar class prior to graduation. This class is a discussion based class that is offered on a variety of topics. The majority of students will take the course in their first year, with roughly half taking the course in their first term, and the other half in the second term of the first year. Early research has indicated that students who earn a “C” or less in the class are at a 1.5 higher risk of leaving the University after their first year. As such, midterm grades are also captured as a potential “early warning” system for retention. Again, these data come from the registrar.

If a student does not take FYS in one term during their first year, they will be taking WRI111. In rare cases students are allowed to exempt this class. Similar to FYS, research has shown that students who do not earn a C or higher are at higher risk of transfer from Wake Forest
