Red Belt Toi-Gye Named after Neo-Confucionist scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570 A.D.). The 37 moves symbolize Yi Hwang's birth on the 37th latitude. The pattern created by the movements forms the Korean word for "scholar."

Chung-Mu The given name of the great Admiral Yi Sun-Sin of the Joseon Dynasty who during the late 16th century Japanese invasions employed the first strategic use of the turtle boat. Generally considered the greatest admiral in history, he won all 23 naval campaigns including one where with just 13 ships and without incurring any casualties, destroyed the entire Japanese fleet of 333 ships, effectively ending the 7 year war. The left hand attack, which is the last move of the pattern, symbolizes his death in battle before his loyalty was fully realized by the King. All of Yi's honors and titles were awarded posthumously.
