Introduction

This dashboard explores the growth in summer school enrollment at Wake Forest University among those undergraduates who entered as first-time, full-time students. The first section depicts the growth in enrollment from the summer of 2014 to the summer of 2022. The second section aims to determine if there is a relationship between summer school enrollment and the time it takes for a student to graduate from WFU. The third section displays what courses these students were most commonly enrolled in during the summer of 2022 by class. Finally, the fourth and fifth sections display what type of students are enrolling in summer terms at WFU and how that has changed as enrollment has grown.

1. Enrollment by Summer

Total Enrollment (Students)

The graph below shows the total number of students enrolled by summer.

Total Credits Earned

The graph below shows the total number of credits earned by summer. Students continue to earn approximately five credits on average each summer they are enrolled.

Percent of Active Students Enrolled

The graph below shows the percent of active students during each summer term who are enrolled.

2. Summer School & Graduation

Summer Enrollment by Cohort

The following table shows the number (and percent) of students who have and have not enrolled in summer school at WFU by entering cohort. Note that the incoming cohort of 2021 has only had one summer to enroll in, the incoming cohort of 2020 has had two summers to enroll in, and so on.

Graduation Status by Cohort

The following table and chart show how long it has taken students to graduate by entering cohort. Please note that the 2018 cohort has not yet had an opportunity to graduate in greater than four years, resulting in the number of students who haven’t graduated yet to seem higher than previous years. Similarly, more students from the 2017 cohort will likely graduate in > 4 years.

3. Summer School Courses 2022

The following table shows the number of students who enrolled in each course in the summer of 2022 by year in school (e.g. a first-year student is one who first enrolled in the fall of 2021).

4. Demographic Distributions by Summer

This section displays trend data for the demographic distributions of undergraduates by the summer in which they were active and/or enrolled. Note that students are included in every summer during which they were active. The purpose of this section is to compare the distribution of the population (active students) to the distribution of the subpopulation (enrolled students).

If a larger percent of enrolled students than the percent of active students are of a certain group, then this group may be overrepresented in summer school enrollment. Contrarily, if a smaller percent of enrolled students than the percent of active students are of a certain group, then this group may be underrepresented in summer school enrollment. For example, in the summer of 2022, 41% of those enrolled were underrepresented minority students while only 32% of all active students were.

Academic Year

This section details the trends in the distribution of academic year for all active undergraduates by summer. That is, if a student entered WFU in the fall of 2021 and enrolled in summer school in 2022, this would be considered their first academic year.

Race and Ethnicity

This section details the trends in the distribution of self-reported race and ethnicity for all active undergraduates by summer. This information reflects race/ethnicity regardless of citizenship status. Students indicate their race/ethnicity on their WFU application. The U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) classification rules are used for the assignment of race (e.g. if a student selected “White” and “Hispanic” they were classified as “Hispanic,” or if a student indicated more than one race and did not select Hispanic, they were classified as “Two or More Races”).

Socioeconomic Status

This section details the trends in the distribution of socioeconomic status for all active undergraduates by summer. Socioeconomic status is determined using the following methodology: a student is categorized as low-income if the student received a Pell Grant, medium-income if the student did not receive a Pell Grant but has need based on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and high-income if the student did not demonstrate financial need or did not submit a FAFSA.

This section details the trends in the distribution of the region from which the students come for all active undergraduates by summer. Geographic regions are defined by the United States Census Bureau. Any student who is not a resident of the United States is considered international.

5. Percent of Demographics Enrolled

This section displays trend data for the percent of each demographic who are enrolled by the summer in which they were enrolled. Note that students are included in every summer during which they were active. The purpose of this section is to view how the percent of students enrolled has changed overtime. Note that each graph has an “all” bar, showing the total percent of active students who were enrolled each summer.

If a certain group’s line trends differently than the “All” line (e.g. increases when the “All” line decreases), then this may indicate strange behavior. Moreover, if a certain group’s line is much higher/lower than the “All” line, this may indicate much higher/lower enrollment in that group than expected. Contrarily, if a certain group’s line is parallel to and near the “All” line, then this group’s behavior is what one would expect. For example, the “International” line on the region chart increases heavily from 2021 to 2022, while the “All” line barely increases.

Academic Year

This section details the trends in the percent of each academic year who are enrolled for all active undergraduates by summer. That is, if a student entered WFU in the fall of 2021 and enrolled in summer school in 2022, this would be considered their first academic year.
