No maternity leave policy.  The Benefits Administration in the WFUHS Policy Manual states that “Benefit plans are administered in compliance with all government regulatory requirements.”  The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 is cited in that section.

Who is eligible?

Employees with at least 12 months of service with their current employer (per FMLA)

Regular faculty and staff employees are eligible to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid Family and Medical Leave (paid may be substituted as described below) if they have:

  • Worked for Wake Forest University for at least 12 months
  • Worked for WFU at least 1259 hours in the past 12 months
  • Submit a properly completed Medical Certification form

For what conditions?

  • To recover from a personal illness or injury
  • To care for a newborn, newly adopted, or newly placed foster child
  • To care for an immediate family member who is seriously ill or injured

  • Employee’s own serious health condition prevents him/her form performing job
  • To care for a parent spouse or child with a serious health condition
  • To care for an employee’s child after birth, or placement for adoption

Is it paid?

No specific policy available

Paid regular salary for period of disability associated with pregnancy or childbirth, normally 6 weeks

  • Available only during period of the academic year in which salary would otherwise be lost
  • If faculty member continues ot work during semester, no salary would be lost
  • If facult member does not work during semester, leave paid as six of fourteen weeks or 40% of salary for semester

Effect on the tenure clock

The provost will extend the time period for tenure consideration to seven years for faculty members who take unpaid parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child
