It may surprise many that Sigma Nu is active
in the community. During the candidate (pledging)
period, we strongly encourage community service
projects. By showing the virtues of philanthropy
to our candidates, we instill a sense of involvement
in the Brotherhood. As an example of how this
virtue carries on after pledging, our Brotherhood
served food at a local homeless shelter during
Spring 2004. This is only a small representation
of all we do.
Every year, Sigma Nu holds a fundraiser for the
Brian Piccolo Cancer Foundation, which is an organization
very close to our university. Brian Piccolo played
football for Wake Forest before playing for the
Chicago Bears. During his career he was diagnosed
with cancer, which he eventually died of.
In 2004, Sigma Nu hosted a campus-wide "Poker
for Piccolo" no-limit Texas Hold'em poker
tournament to raise money. The cost to play was
reasonable for a student, and we gave out prizes
ranging from televisions and electronics to a
$200 gift certificate to Hanes Mall.
