Preamble
It is the purpose of the Pre-Veterinary Student Association to serve as an interest group for students of Wake Forest University who are pursuing admission to a veterinary graduate program and a career in veterinary science. The goals of the Pre-Veterinary Student Association are to provide insight for its members into the various opportunities and careers in the field of veterinary science, to assist its members in their pursuit of acceptance to a graduate program in veterinary sciences by advising and suggesting the proper curriculum and resume-building experiences, to provide its members with current materials in veterinary science in order to keep them informed and knowledgeable, and to support the mission and purpose of Wake Forest University.
Article I
Name The official name of this interest group is the Pre-Veterinary Student Association and may be abbreviated as PVSA.
Article II
Membership Section 1: Membership of PVSA is open to any member of the Wake Forest community regardless of race, sex, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, or academic standing. Section 2: The Executive Committee may suspend any PVSA member at any time for inappropriate conduct as according to the standards and Honor Code of Wake Forest University. The decision must be approved by 2/3 of the Executive Committee to stay in effect. Section 3: Membership categories: a) Executive Committee / Officers: A member in good standing, who has paid dues, and who has been elected into office by a 2/3 majority vote of PVSA members. Executive Committee members have voting power in PVSA meetings as well as in Executive Committee meetings. b) Members: An individual in good standing with PVSA who expresses interest in veterinary science and who has paid his or her semester dues. Members have voting power in PVSA meetings.
Article III
Officers Section 1:
Officers and Their Responsibilities a) President: The president chairs PVSA meetings, organizes the meetings and events of PVSA, chairs meetings of the Executive Committee, and acts as a liaison to all external constituencies of Wake Forest University as well as to the community. b) Secretary: The secretary keeps the minutes of PVSA meetings, chairs PVSA meetings in the absence of the president, and is responsible for the hospitality of guests or services provided for PVSA. c) Treasurer: The treasurer is responsible for all PVSA funds, the tracking and handling of all funds, and the collection of membership dues. d) Publicity Director: The publicity director is responsible for all communication of PVSA, including but not limited to the advertisements of meetings and other activities. Section 2: Elections a) Elections of PVSA officers will occur on the first meeting of the fall semester. b) All officers must be in good standing in the Wake Forest University community and must have paid their dues. c) A 2/3 majority vote is required by attending members in order for an officer to be elected into office. d) The term of office is one academic year for all officers. Section 3: Upon vacancy of an office there will be an election held at the next regular meeting in order to fill the vacant office. This election will follow the guidelines stated in Section 2.
Article IV
Executive Committee Section 1: The members of the Executive Committee are the officers described in Article III, Section 1; their election is as described in Article III, Section 2. Section 2: The purpose of the Executive Committee is to provide activities and events that further the knowledge and interest of the members of PVSA in veterinary medicine. The Executive Committee also serves as a group to guide members in their pursuit of acceptance into a graduate program in veterinary science.
Article V
Meetings Section 1: A regular meeting will be held every two weeks. The Executive Committee is responsible for the planning of the meetings and their proceedings. Section 2: Extra activities will be scheduled by the Executive Committee and will be announced to PVSA members by the publicity director. Section 3: The Executive Committee shall meet at the beginning and end of each semester to plan the next set of meetings. The committee will also meet as necessary when there is an issue to be addressed.
Article VI
Finances Section 1: Handling of Funds a) The treasurer is responsible for the handling and tracking of all PVSA funds. b) The spending of PVSA funds requires the approval of 2/3 of the members, both executive and associate, attending the vote. c) Funds will only be spent in ways to pursue the purpose and goals of PVSA. Section 2: Dues for membership are $5.00 per semester and will be collected at the beginning of each semester.
Article VII
Amendment Section 1: No amendment shall be voted on until two weeks from the time of its proposal have elapsed.
Section 2
PVSA Approval a) Amendments to the PVSA constitution must be approved by a ¾ vote of the Executive Committee. b) The amendment, once approved by the Executive Committee, must be approved by a 2/3 majority vote of PVSA members attending the vote. Section 3: Amendments approved by PVSA shall be submitted to the Student Life Committee for approval.
Article VIII
Faculty Advisor In the event of the need of a new faculty advisor, nominations made by PVSA members shall be interviewed by the Executive Committee, reports of interviews shall be given to the members, and an election shall be held. A 2/3 majority vote is required to approve the nomination.
Article IX
Ratification Section 1: The constitution must be approved with a 2/3 majority vote by members attending the vote. Section 2: After receiving PVSA approval, the constitution shall be submitted for approval to the Charter Committee of the Student Government, the Student Government Legislature, the Student Life Committee, and the faculty of Wake Forest University, respectively.
