Wake Forest NATIONAL EARLYBIRD

RULES LINCOLN-DOUGLAS AND INDIVIDUAL EVENTS

Each school may enter no more than FIVE students in any one event, and no more than FOUR students in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas. A 5th and 6th slot in Varsity or Jr. Varsity Lincoln-Douglas may be requested, and acceptance will be at the tournament director's discretion. Because of location each school may bring up to ten in Congress. Contestants cannot enter L-D debate and individual events. Individual event entrants may enter only ONE individual event within a pattern, but can enter A & B patterns. Since I. E. and L-D prelim rounds will be held at the North Forsyth campus, participants in team debate may not enter I. E. Event material must be new for the 2006 season. We offer three prelims, beginning elims with quarter-finals as warranted. Up to six finalists and six semi-finalists in each event will receive plaques, as will all double octafinalists in L-D. Quarter finalists in individual events will receive certificates.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Rules & Format

L-D debaters can be entered in Varsity or Junior-varsity but total L-D slots may not exceed 8. Division will break to Double-Octa or Octa finals depending on the entries. Junior Varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate is restricted to debaters in their first two years of competition. In Lincoln-Douglas, Ties will be broken based on record, adjusted points, total points, opponents' record, double-adjusted points, judge variance,  flip of a coin, in that order.. Speech times: 6 Min Aff l 3 Min CX l 7 Min Neg l 3 Min CX l 4 Min 1AR l 6 Min NR l 3 Min 2AR l 4 Min Prep.

Pattern A: Rules & Formats

Contestants can jot down brief notes for reference in their speech. Student may be asked question by judges in the finals
Dramatic Interpretation: Contestants will present an interpretation of material of literary value from a prose or dramatic work of a serious and/or humorous nature. Individuals may use one selection or develop a program that develops a theme using two or more selections. No make-up, costumes, or props. Use of manuscript is acceptable. Time limit of 5-10 minutes. The tournament assumes no liability for copyright infringements.
Humorous Interpretation: Contestants will present an interpretation of material of literary value of humorous nature. Individuals may use one selection or develop a program developing a theme using two or more selections. No make-up, costumes, or props. Use of manuscript is acceptable. Time limit of 5-10 minutes. Pattern B: Rules & Formats

Extemporaneous Speaking: Contestants will choose from three topic questions each round. Topic areas include: domestic politics, international policy and social-cultural issues. One area will be emphasized each round. A staggered draw will begin a half hour prior to competition. Time limits: 4-7 minutes. Brief notes for reference during the speech are optional. Student may be asked question by judges in the finals. Computer are allowed in the extemp prepartion room.
Duo Interpretation: Participants may use a single selection or a mixed program drawing from prose, poetry, drama or other literary forms. (Students are encouraged to adapt forms other than plays to develop an original program.) It may be serious, humorous, or both. Creativity, quality of literature, and interpretive skills are the evaluative criteria. Why not, for example, abandon play scripts for speeches from the 1800's, interacting love sonnets from disparate authors, adaptations of children's literature--the sky is the limit. Manuscripts are optional, but suggested, props discouraged, as the event is duo interp, not duo acting. Time limit, 5-10 minutes.
Original Oratory: Contestants will deliver a 6-10 minute speech of their own creation. Contestants must have a full manuscript of the speech available. The speech may be memorized, but since the tournament is early in the season students may use manuscripts if they wish. The purpose of the speech is to persuade the audience to a course of action and/or consider an alternative viewpoint regarding a topic. Originality and analysis should be emphasized. It is the tournament's position that OO and expository speaking are not all that different. True persuasion can reinforce, inform, as well as change attitudes and opinions.
