Pattern
B: Rules & Formats
Extemporaneous Speaking:
Contestants will choose from three topic
questions each round. Topic areas include: domestic politics, international
policy and social-cultural issues. One area will be emphasized each
round. A staggered draw will begin a half hour prior to competition.
Time limits: 4-7 minutes. Brief notes for reference during the speech
are optional. Student
may be asked question by judges in the finals. Computer are allowed in the extemp prepartion room.
Duo Interpretation:
Participants may use a single selection or a mixed program drawing
from prose, poetry, drama or other literary forms. (Students are encouraged
to adapt forms other than plays to develop an original program.) It
may be serious, humorous, or both. Creativity, quality of literature,
and interpretive skills are the evaluative criteria. Why not, for example,
abandon play scripts for speeches from the 1800's, interacting love
sonnets from disparate authors, adaptations of children's literature--the
sky is the limit. Manuscripts are optional, but suggested, props discouraged,
as the event is duo interp, not duo acting. Time limit, 5-10 minutes.
Original
Oratory: Contestants will deliver a 6-10 minute speech of their
own creation. Contestants must have a full manuscript of the speech
available. The speech may be memorized, but since the tournament is
early in the season students may use manuscripts if they wish. The purpose
of the speech is to persuade the audience to a course of action and/or
consider an alternative viewpoint regarding a topic. Originality and
analysis should be emphasized. It is the tournament's position that
OO and expository speaking are not all that different. True persuasion
can reinforce, inform, as well as change attitudes and opinions.
Breaking Procedure for Individual Events:
All Individual
events will break with at least 12 advance to semis, with 6 advancing to finals. Tie breaking for events is: (1) cum ranks (2) cum
rates, (3) number of firsts. Events will not use cumulative ranks and
rates to determine breaks from elim panels. In Elims, ties broken by
(1) judge rank, (2) judge preference, (3) rating.
