RESUME OF SPEECH AND DEBATE ACTIVITIES FOR THE PAST YEAR

During the past year the Wake Forest debate squad has competed in five tournaments, seventeen speech contests and seventy-nine intercollegiate debates. At the Dixie tournament at Winthrop College, in which 275 speakers from 36 colleges participated, the team won over half of the contests in the men's division. In the Southeastern Speech Tournament last March the squad took top honors, winning three first places and a second in the four contests conducted. Honors won in the North Carolina Tournament include first places in oratory, extempore speaking and impromptu.

In the National tournament the Wake Forest representative placed third in extempore speaking in a field of eighty-one speakers. At the National Student Congress at Topeka last year a Wake Forest student was elected Speaker of the house of representatives and presided over a half-hour broadcast on a national hook-up over the Columbia Broadcasting System. Both the Speaker of' the house and the president of the senate at the North Carolina Student Legislative Assembly were Wake Forest men.
