Wake Forest Debate has enjoyed a strong intercollegiate tradition since the turn of the century. The Wake program currently ranks among the top programs nationally, based on tournament results. Although some may be aware of competitive results on the college level, many do not have that opportunity. So let us point out a few highlights from the last few years.


2006 NDT Finals

Top ten ranking in the NDT national tournament results since 1988-2002, longest streak in the nation

One of two schools to qualify three teams for NDT in 92, 93, 95. 96;97, 98, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006. Cleared more teams to the eliminations than any other school the last ten years. Multiple final eight team, Semi-Finals 57, 93, 94, 95; Winner 97, 2nd, 2006; Top Seed 2001. Novice Nationals Champion, 1996, 2004

1997 National Final Round. - WFU vs. Georgia

Wake's Collegiate Tournament, The Franklin R. Shirley Dixie Classic, selected by poll of national coaches as the "Tournament of the Decade" for the 80s & 90s. Coach Ross Smith, Top Judge of the decade 1990s. Three "National Coach of the Year" awards.

Copeland Award - Brovero & Hughes

Invited twelve of the last fifteen years to Kentucky Round Robin; Dartmouth '93-97, 99, 2000, 2002, Tied for first 2005. Won Kentucky RR in 1996, Tied for first 1998, 2000, 2002.

TOP FIRST ROUND TEAMs - 1995 National Debate Tournament - Adrienne Brovero & John Hughes - Rex Copland Trophy; Hughes & Prestes, 2nd in 1997, Lotz & Atchison 2nd in 2000; Many teams in top ten individual Copeland teams. Also many top five NDT speakers including Gloria Cabada Top Speaker 1985. At least one "first round bid" 1988-1993, 1995-1997, 1999-2006
