Wake Forest was
host to 10 colleges and universities last week end in the Third Annual
Dixie Classic Debate Tournament. The tournament consisted of six rounds
of debating on the national debate topic: Resolved: that the further
development of nuclear weapons should be prohibited by international
agreement.
Representing the College in the contests were Sherry Daily, Allen
Carroll, Dick Burleson and Don Schoonmaker. Wake Forest was ineligible
for the tournament trophy since .the College was host for the event.
Registration for the tournament began Thursday in the lobby on the second
floor of Reynolda Hall. Debating began Friday; and after the first rounds
several of the visitors were given a tour of Old Salem. There were two
debates Saturday, at the conclusion of which final results were announced
in Phi Hall where trophies and awards. were presented. According to
College director of debate, Franklin R. Shirley, some of: the nation's
top debating teams attended the tourney. They were as follows: Duke
University, Notre Dame, Denison University (Ohio), University of Florida;
U. S. Military Academy and William and Mary, Also the University of
Kentucky, Maryland, Richmond and Middlebury College of Vermont.
Each school entered two teams in the contest--a negative and an affirmative
team. Debate coaches from the schools serve as judges for the debates
