"In the spring of 1923 one of our number crowned himself with laurels and brought honor to his class and college by being declared the best orator in the state when he won the Peace Oratorical medal. Neither are our great achievements in the field of society work told by this one event, for our societies contributed two or more of the South's greatest debaters, sweeping their opponents from their feet and saying multitudes by their arguments and eloquence. This was attested when our representatives were declared winners in the debate with William Jewell College at the Southern Baptist Convention." Howler, 1924, p. 67. From "Senior Class History." |
