Jay Beddow ('92) lives in Tokyo, Japan and is working for JP Morgan managing new products and new strategy rollouts in Asia.

Joe Bellon (MA, 93) and his wife Brenda (MA) had a daughter, Zoe Melissa, on July 21st.
Michael Bonura (2001) is working in the family restaurant businesses in and surrounding communities in Newburgh New York. He has been managing a large catering segment of the business but is is currently managing "Mom's," a Newburgh restaurant.

Adrienne Brovero (1995, MA 1997) and Judd Kimball (1990) are engaged to be married in June 2003. Adrienne is finishing her Ph.D. at Northwestern and Judd is Administrative Assistant for the Communication Department.
Bruce Brown (1943) passed away in January 2001.
Jamie (Fraser) Calabrese ('96) together with her husband, are attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Since graduating from Wake she served as a Naval intelligence officer, last leading the Carl Vinson Battle Group's targeting cell and directed targeting during Operation Enduring Freedom for combat missions over Afghanistan. She also served as a Korean analyst for US forces Korea in Seoul.
Lamar Caudle (1950)passed away in April 2001. He was Wake Student Body President 49-50 and attended Yale Law. Picture from 1948-49 squad.

Ed Christman, 1950 debater
Ed Christman ('50) who has served as chaplain at Wake Forest since 1969 and has been affiliated with the University for more than 50 years, will retire July 31, 2003. President Thomas K. Hearn Jr. said, "Ed Christman is one of the Wake Forest 'institutions' whose tenure and influence have made him one of the most visible and beloved figures in our modern history." Pictured at left is debater Christman from 1949-50 Wake debate squad. He has been a long term and active supporter of Wake Debate, using many opportunities to promote debate in civic discussions on campus. He also is a charter member of Wake's Tau Kappa Alpha honorary forensics fraternity.
Elisia Cohen (MA 2000) was engaged to Jeff VanCleave (former debate coach at KU) in May, 2002. Elisa and Jeff now live in Los Angeles CA, where she is finishing her PhD at USC. Elisia has been publishing as well: , "Civic Actions After September 11th: "The Role of Multilevel Storytelling" (will Ball-Rokeach, Kim, and Jung), Prometheus (August 2002 issue) and "Online Journalism as Market Journalism" in the December 2002 issue of Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media.
George E. Copple (1936) passed away in January of 2001. He was a Clinical Psychologist living in Nashville, TN. With his collegues he was the 1934 NC State Debate Champion. He was President of Pi Kappa Delta chapter and reached the national semi-finals of extemporaous speaking at the Houston nationals in 1936. Picture at the right was his 1934 yearbook picture.
Chris Cooper ('96) has taken a position in Washington D.C. doing public affairs work for the American Planning Association. He deals with community and urban planning from environment and public health to transportation and affordable housing.
Eric DeRose (2001) is with Engel O'Neill Advertising/Public Relations in Erie, PA and is making plans for Law School in the near future.
Chris DeVault (2002) is working on his MA in English at Georgetown University, DC.
Philip Diehl ('59, JD, '61) passed away in September 2002. His law firm-Diehl & Gibson-was in in Raeford, NC. Mr. Diehl was a lifelong and generous friend to Wake Forest.

Emma Filstrup (2000) traveled through Thailand in July and is attending Law school at Georgetown.
Brian Flagler ('95) and his wife Amy now reside in the beautiful Oregon mountains (Sisters, OR). Brian is Vice President & General Counsel for Multnomah Publishers, Inc.
David Gainey ('90) Works for Capital One in Richmond, VA where he now is the group manager in the Strategic Infrastructure wing of the Direct Marketing Center, working on capacity planning, modeling, pricing structures, controls and governance. He is also finishing a MBA from the University of Richmond and spent last December with an International business residency in Mexico. He and his Wife hosted the Richmond Tournament delegation this fall.
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross (1998) is clerking for Judge Harry T. Edwards on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and will be working for the law firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner after his clerkship. (Daveed recounts a National Championship)
Mark Grant ('93, MA '95) is in his fourth year of practicing technology law at Morris, Manning & Martin in Atlanta. He continues to write updates for his book Law of the Internet. He lives with his Wife Kara ( MA )in Atlanta. They are expecting a little Grant this summer.
John Graham is serving as the Director of Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, or as the Wall Street Journallabels the position, "President Bush's regulatory czar." Link to June WSJ article.

Craig Green ('96) is a lawyer for the Civil Appellate Branch of the Department of Justice in Washington DC, writing briefs and make arguments for a variety of civil cases in the courts of appeals.
Justin Green is debate coach ('98) and Dan Lingel (MA), Director of Debate, at Dallas Jesuit HS. Their top debate team from won the always difficult Texas State Debate Tournament in 2001. Winning States in Texas is like winning the NDT for college debate. This fall Justin began his new position as the debate coach at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

Melanie Henson (MA) is living in Winston-Salem, working as a Brand Marketing manager for Sara Lee Corp. She will be beginning the Executive MBA program at Duke in January.
Rev. Charles Upchruch Harris (1935). He was a CEO and worked with oriental research in Virginia. He wrote "I was on the committee to select the furnishings for the Euzelian Society. At the North end of the spacious room was a raised dais and desk for the President or Chairman. Along the East and West walls were elevated platforms for two (or three) rows of arm chairs for the members. A speaker's lectern stood in the center just below the President's desk. Debates

Vicki (Leonard) Henderson ('80) is the Grants Manager for Advocates for Children of New York, a public school educational advocacy organization in New York City. She handles all government, foundation, and corporate proposals, as well as special events and individual giving. She lives on Staten Island with her family.

Elva Lawrence Hunt ('51) has been in contact recounting interesting history of women's participation in Wake debate 50+ years ago. She recalls, along with Cecyle Arnold (O'Bryant), '51, Dr. Shirley had to make a special effort to get permission from Dean Johnson for the girls to leave the campus for the long trip debating trip in Spring 1951 to Stillwater, Oklahoma and Gainesville, Florida, even though it was a spring vacation week. They received permission. Elva recounts from the trip: Dr. Shirley "drove his new Chevy, but since we were to be gone for about ten days, storage space was dear The information from Stillwater instructed the women to bring evening dresses for the final banquet. Well, Cecyle Arnold and I wanted to do the proper thing, so we lugged along, in our limited space, two long dresses. As it turned out, not one otherwoman debater brought her long dress: We had to sit through a banquet as well as walk to the podium for awards in those damn long dresses. We were embarrassed almost to tears. Fessa smiled and reassured us we looked great and that we had followed the directions and should be proud that we did. The pain was assuaged, somewhat." Jason Jarvis (MA, '97) has accepted a teaching position at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Koreas for the next two years. He is I am teaching advanced English a business argumentation class in the graduate school of journalism and communication.

Cyrus Murray Johnson (1939) passed away in January 2001.

Keith Jones (1993), resides in Atlanta, GA where he is an executive Underwriter with Zurich North America. He underwrites the insurance for the world leaders in security software & detection - Internet Security Systems, a post 9/11 challenge. He will begin studying for his certification as a Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)in February. Keith and his wife, former UGA debater Monica Mizell, are expecting their first child in late May of 2003.
Seth Kahn ('90), Finishing his PhD in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric at Syracuse University in July 2002, and is an Assistant Professor of English at West Chester University (PA)
Brian Lain ('93), Is finishing his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa this fall and is the new Director of Debate at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

Greg ('88) and Gloria (Cabada) Leman ('88) continue to work at Metagenix, Inc., a computer software company founded by Greg in Durham, NC. Greg is the President & CEO of the 18-person company, and Gloria is General Counsel as well as VP of Finance & Administration. They are busy launching the company's newest product, MetaPure, used for data quality auditing. In their spare time, Greg and Gloria are avid Carolina Hurricanes fans and both play ice hockey in local leagues.
Wes Lotz (2000) is attending Baylor Law School on a Jaworski Scholarship. He is currently preparing for upcoming moot court competition at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, helping out on the law review, and working as an intern for Federal District Court Judge Walter Smith.
Dr. Carwile LeRoy (1955), Passed away in May 2002. He was one of Wake Forest's most successful debaters ever. He attended the NDT at West Point in 1954 and in 1955 reached the semi-finals (link to 1955 NDT picture). His record with Muriel Kay Arant in '54 and Joe Hough in '55 rival any in Wake history (1995 NDT Qualifier). He was heavily involved in campus activities winning major scholarships including the Moorhouse to attend UNC Medical School. He also had a sense of humor as witnessed in 1954 Howler story. He was Prof. of Medicine, Medical College of SC.
Lindsay Littlefield was awarded one of the nation's most prestigious undergraduate honors, the Truman Scholarship. The government funded scholarship awards $30,000 to college juniors who are interested in careers in politics or not-for-profit work. Lindsay indicated she wants to be governor of Minnesota. She plans graduate work at either U. Texas, Austin or Harvard.
Thomas Loquvam (2001) is attending the University of Arizona Law School in Tucson. He and Anna are engaged to be married in May 2003.
Allan Louden, WFU Director, worked as a debate advisor with the 2002 Elizabeth Dole senate campaign.
Jim Lyle (MA '2001) has been named Director of Debate at Clarion University, PA
Sean Nowak ('98) graduated fromNotre Dame Law School in 2001 and is working at Latham & Watkins in New York City. He practices in intellectual property litigation and international arbitration.
 Mike Perry (2002) is working as an analyst with the Health Care Advisory Board in Washington, DC. He was a national finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship last year.
Robert O. Poplin (1935). Robert Poplin passed away in February 2002. He is survived by his wife Lillian in MtAiry, NC. His professional career he was principal of North Surry High School and a former moderator of the Surry Baptist Association. In a 1998 letter to the teams Mr. Poplin lauded the utility of his debate training and wrote the following: "I began participating in the College's debate program the Fall of '31, and continued through at least the next year, Dr. J.R. Quesinberry was then the Debate Coach, and he held evening meetings of the group during which I learned to determine what the basic issues were in whatever the query's subject was, and to speak on them, rather than to try to talk about every thing that could be thought of for or against the proposal." Amy Powell (1998) is a second year student at the New York University School of Law. She is on NYU's Law Review, and was recently designated a Pomeroy Scholar (an award given to the students with the top ten GPA's after the first year).
Brian Prestes ('97) clerked for the Honorable Sandra L. Lynch, United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston and is now with the law firm Covington & Burling, located in Washington D.C. writing Cert-Petitions.
Kevin M. Quinley ('76) is Senior Vice President, Risk Services at Medmarc Insurance Group in Chantilly, VA . He recently wrote Business at Risk, a book addressing the problems of risk managing terrorism. Published by the National Underwriter Company, Business at Risk is Quinley's ninth book. Clay Rhodes ('99) (Harrison) is the Managing Editor of the Duke Law Journal. During the summer he worked at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York, and the Dallas office of Los Angeles based Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.
Bruce Rogers (MA '75) is coaching debate at Northside High School in Warner Robins, Georgia. His teams have won 9 State Championships and 19 Region Championships, and more than a few other awards. Bruce also served as President of the Georgia Debate Coaches' Association for 10 years, founding the Georgia Debate Coaches' Hall of Fame, of which he is an inductee. He is also a Barkley Forum Key Coach. He is married to Susan (Butler, for UGA debater) and their family Jeremy (age 16), Chris (12) and Stephanie (6).
Mike Rowan ('94) is partner in a financial firm, Pro Sports Financial, in Miami. The firm does financial planning and investments for professional athletes.
Dr. Lonel Shaw (1959) passed away in April 2002. He was a professor at the University of Northern Arizona. (Link to 1958 Squad with Lonel Shaw).
Jeff Sodko ('93, Wake Law '97) is the Associate General Council in the legal department of the United Auto Workers in Detroit, MI.

Andy Ryan will attend the Baylor Law School with the Leon Jaworski Scholarship. Wake's Wes Lotz is the second year Jaworski Scholar at Baylor.
Rae Lynn Schwartz (MA, 2002) will be attending Grad School at the University of Iowa in the fall.
Bill & Kim Shanahan welcomed little William Dionysus Shanahan into the world May6th in Hays Kansas, where Bill is Director of Debate at Ft. Hays State Univ. and Kim is Director of Forensics at Hays HS.

Jordana Sternberg (1995) is currently a fifth year litigation associate in the Atlanta office of the international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. She is busy planning a wedding with her Fiancé' Brett Berlin in Florida this May.
Keith Vaughan ('72) has been named managing Partner for Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Winston-Salem, NC. The firm is among the top 100 law firms in the US. For several years, he served as national coordinating counsel for a Fortune 500 company in products liability litigation. He has tried numerous jury and bench trials, handled various administrative proceedings and argued a wide range of matters in appellate courts. He is married to Lydia Hasecke Vaughn and their son Fritz debated during the 2002-2 Season. Picture shows Keith in 1969 Squad Room.
Paula Walker ('96) is in her second year at Wake Forest University Law School.
Ron Wastyn (MA '88) is coaching again this year... this time women's golf at St. Ambrose University. In his first year, his team won the conference, and he was named Midwest Classic Conference coach of the year. He continues as Associate Professor of Communication and Chair of the Communication Department at St. Ambrose Univ. in Davenport, Iowa.
Linda Hippler Wastyn ('86) is in her 6th year as Director of Grants and Information Resources at St. Ambrose and on the board of our local Association of Fundraising Professionals chapter. Ron and Linda's son Matthew turned 6 in October.

David Williams (Director 1983-5) is a professor at the University of Missouri at Rolla. He is the co-editor of Controversia: An International Journal of Debate and Democratic Renewal.

George Edgar Williamson (1928 ) passed away in December 2001.
Tod Woodbury ('76) "is happily ensconced in Pensacola, Florida, practicing law. On occasion, he is attending debate tournaments, harassing old partners and students, and hoping some others will call. (Becky, Janice, Paula...?)."
Audrey Young ('2000, MA 2002) is working with Bank of America, in Commercial Banking and is planning a wedding for summer 2003.
Bill Ziegelmueller ('91) and Nancy have a two year old son (Justin) and live in Chicago. Bill works with the firm of Stetler & Duffy, Ltd. who specialize in white collar criminal defense. Bill is currently representing the head of one of the Muslim charities that was shut down by the government post 9/11.
