Ted Belch,
coach at Glenbrook North, won an unprecedented third straight NFL
high National Debate Championship this last spring in Norman Oklahoma.
Joe Bellon
has been named director of Debate at Georgia State University, Atlanta
Drew Brown
is in his final year at Duke. Last summer he at Kilpatrick Stockton
in Winston and Smith Helms Mulliss and Moore in Greensboro. He is
frequently spotted at Wake sports events.
Alan and Laura
Coverstone welcomed a second son, Mason, into their family in
April. Alan coaches debate at The Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville,
TN.
Nate French
and Camille's new baby Cameron Nathaniel French, 7lb Oz 61/2 Oz arrived
in Durham, NC this September. Nate is finishing a Ph.D. in communication
at UNC-CH
Mituhiro Fujumaki
(Ph.D., Iowa) was recently married in Japan and is living in Fujisawa,
Japan.
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross,
clerked for Judge Harry Edward, DC Circuit Court of Appeals, serves
on the NYU Law Review, received the Pomeroy Scholarship at NYU and
married Amy Powell in Elizabeth City, NC this past summer.
Amy is attending law school at NYU.
John Graham was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the US Senate as
Administrator of Information and Regulatory Affairs of the Office
of Management and Budget. He resigned as Director of the Harvard Center
for Risk Analysis to accept the positoin. The 1970s Air Bags Affirmative
case lead to becoming the nation's "Regulatory Czar." Congratulations.
Craig Green
is working as an attorney in the DOJ's Solicitor General Office for
Ted Olsen.
Justin Green
finished his MA at Kansas State University and is the debate coach
at Dallas Jesuit HS in Texas.
Keith Griffin
wrote that he enjoyed reading the Debate newsletter. He now lives
with his family in Hanover, NH. Keith's wife if is the Dartmouth College
Register for Arts and Sciences and he is serving as the Director,
Employee and Organization Development in the Office of Human Resources.

Lucie Jenkins
Johnson, '49 wrote in a letter April 1, 2001. "I was one
of the first two (or was it four) girls on the debate team. Dr. Shirley
began coaching then. We did realize what a "cutting edge"
move his action was. This was '48. The girls didn't go on the road
because we were [refined] champions. The girls were part of the 'home
practice' team before the boys went on the road. However, I do remember
our trip girls made it on the road - to Duke to debate their 2nd team.
Topic was a national education issue." Lucie is retired to Chapel
Hill after 50 years as a clinical social worker in the Detroit area

Clay Rhodes worked last summer at the Dallas office of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
This year he was named to the Law Journal at Duke Univ.
Mike & Robin Ridge have moved from a post-doc research appointment in
Australia to Scotland in September. Mike is a professor of Philosophy
at the University of Edinburg
Michael Seezen
and Rebecca welcomed son James into the world Sept. 11, a healthy
7lb, 12 Oz bundle of joy. Michael is a lawyer in Columbia SC
Bynam
Shaw, who always brought perspective to his writing and humor
to personal interactions passed away at his home in Winston-Salem
on Aug. 27. Bynam entered Wake Forest in 1940 on a debating scholarship
and participated until his studies were interrupted by World War II.
His wit and special charm were perfected, in part, in his forensics
competitions, which included, winning 1st in After Dinner Speaking
at the Grand Eastern Tournament in 1942, a prestigious competition.
He also served in the Literary Societies chairing central activities
such as the Society Day debates. Along with heavyweights C. C. Hope,
Sam Behrends, Gene Worrell, Bynam contributed to one of the "golden
eras" of Wake Debate.
After serving in U.S. Merchant Marines, he returned to Wake Forest
in 1946 after World War II to complete his bachelor's degree. In his
senior year, he was editor of the Old Gold & Black. He later spent
many years serving as the student newspaper's faculty advisor. After
a distinguished journalism career including Washington and European
correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, he returned to Wake Forest in
1965. His writings included numerous books including The History of
Wake Forest College, Volume IV 1943-67. He was 78.
