Prelims on the Wake Forest campus, elims at the Sundance

ENTRY LIMITATIONS

The tournament size is limited by the number of classrooms, and we lost still more last year due to violations of the "no food and drinks in the rooms" policy under which most departments lend us use of rooms.

Last year's entry rules seemed to work decently so we will go that way again (subject to minor modification in case of lack of clarity in explanation or other kinds of "Doh" events).

1) Every school that wants to enter can AUTOMATICALLY receive TWO entry slots as long as they enter by Oct. 25.

2) After that, as space permits, we will then take additional teams, up to a total of four teams per school, as long as ALL THREE OR FOUR teams have cleared to elims in TWO varsity tournaments this fall. If both debaters on the team EITHER cleared twice this fall OR qualified for NDT in the past OR reached elimination rounds at CEDA Nationals in the past, the team is considered to have met the "cleared twice" requirement

3) After that, as space permits, we will take additional teams up to a total of three teams per school as long as ALL THREE teams have cleared to elims in at least ONE varsity tournament this fall.

4) After that, as space permits, we will take additional teams up to a total of four teams per school as long as ALL FOUR teams have cleared to elims in at least ONE varsity tournament this fall.

5) Waivers of the entry rules may be granted at the discretion of the WFU coaching staff.

Note: clearing at a varsity tournament means clearing within the defined rules of CEDA regarding how many teams are allowed to clear at a tournament. In other words, if a ten team tournament cleared 8 teams, all 8 would not have cleared according to the rules.

We will NOT hold first year breakout rounds this year.

Q: Will we enter via Bruschke's site?
A: Yes, after that is set up. For now, chill. With the 2 teams per school limit, no school should get shut out any time soon.
Q: We may want to re-pair our teams. How might this affect things?
A: As long as all debaters meet the criteria pair them how you wish.
Q: Does the two clears rule mean by Oct. 25? Since there are tournaments the week before Wake are teams admitted conditionally on clearing before Wake and then dropped in the last few days to give those slots to someone else or are teams told they can't come and then meet the criteria before the tournament but met the criteria to late?
A: The entry deadline is November 1 (unless we are full by then). Therefore, you must have cleared twice by Nov. 1.
Q: What if we enter our own tournament, do well enough to clear, but operate under a rule that does not allow host teams to participate in elims?
A: We will give you the benefit of the doubt and treat you as if you cleared.
Q: What about tournaments that clear fewer teams than CEDA rules would allow? If we do well enough to clear under the CEDA rules does that count even though Harvard is mean and only allows 16 out of 70 teams to clear?
A: Go to an easier tournament.
Q: What if Katsulas and Dallas conspire to create a fake tournament and "clear" additional teams?
A: In the words of Will Repko, "Bite me."

JUDGES

A qualified judge must be provided to cover your judging obligations. One judge for up to two teams, or two judges for three teams is required. Each judge must have a judging philosophy posted on Planet Debate no later than Wednesday before the tournament. There may be a possibility of hiring a judge for $160.00 per team, but with the number of teams last year it was difficult to find judges. Judging obligations extend through the octa-final round or one round beyond that in which your team is eliminated. Because we must attend the banquet by the scheduled time, we ask that all judges render a decision no later than two and one-half hours after the scheduled start of the round. If 2:45 has elapsed we will flip a coin to determine the next rounds pairing.

ENTRY INFORMATION

All judges are obligated through Octa-finals. If you will be available beyond that: Quarters and Semi Finals please indicate the latest each judge will be available.

  • Case List: As soon as possible please provide the tournament the most recently read copy of the each teams affirmative plan, 1AC outline, 1AC citations, negative generic positions, disads, counterplans and Kritics. These are the materials we gather for packets during the tournament and having as much as possible before the tournament benefits everyone. We produce a case list available at registration, as well as an updated version each morning of the tournament. The case list is a prodigious project and benefits all. Your providing the basic information prior to the tournament makes this service a much more doable task. Please e-mail this information to JP Lacy (lacyjp@wfu.edu)

FORMAT

The 9 minute constructives, 6 minute rebuttals. Rounds one and two will be balanced presets with all subsequent rounds power paired . Elimination rounds will begin at the double-octa-final level.

RULES

  • Brackets will be broken for elimination rounds.
  • We will use side equalization for elimination rounds.Flip rounds will be randomly determined by the tab room and sides will be assigned at posting.
  • We use Gary Larson's judge preference system.
  • Upon the conclusion of the debate we ask that you (a) make a decision, voting for one and only one team, (b) turn in the white copy of the ballot, and then (c) reveal your decision to the teams, discussing your reason for decision. You may find the ballot more useful to highlight "ways to improve" than a further resolution of the "round specific issues."
