The Future

In 2005, there were only 2 members of the Wake Forest Cycling team. We simply rode together for the pure enjoyment of the sport. Then, we started to delve into the competitive nature of collegiate cycling. In 2006, we had 15 members, and began to scratch the surface of building a full team. Now in 2007, we have 35 members, full team kits, a full line of nation-wide sponsors and hosting one of the premiere events of the cycling season. While we are officially a 'club' sport, we do not think of ourselves as such, we are a "team."

After a break-through season last year, we are looking forward to continuing our growth. We have a lot of returning riders who are eager to ride again. We have also had a very successful recruiting process already. Regardless of whether or not people want to race, we are going to have a place for every single individual. If you just want to cruise around or if you want to live on the bike, we have a place for you! Our community involvement is also increasing. Everyone is looking forward to making Winston-Salem ever more present in the cycling eye.

Background of Wake Forest Cycling

The club was active sporadically in the past. As the club was aimed exclusively towards racing, membership declined and it was disbanded. Then, in 2005, with the appointment of the new president, Zane Schweer, the club was rapidly undergoing changes. While racing was our primary goal, we knew that numerous other cyclists would just like to ride, and, thus, they may have felt reluctant to join. However, by making the club more open to “joy riders” and with the excitement from the success of Lance Armstrong, the team was starting to see growth while encouraging riders to try racing. The recruiting process the team was undertaking was aimed at attracting many new riders. We started off with two friends just wanting to ride, but we wanted more, and now have begun to rapidly change the cycling culture in and around the Winston-Salem area.
