Philanthropy

Pancake Phest

Pancake Phest is our spring fundraiser. On one weekend night, our sisters prepare pancakes for hungry students who are out and about across campus. With a ticket purchased from a sister, a student can get all-you-can-eat pancakes and orange juice. The money raised in this campaign goes to the campus-wide Brian Piccolo Foundation, which supports cancer research.

Speed Read

In the fall, we host a competition amonst sororities, fraternities, and any other organization that would like to join! The goal is to read as many words as you can from a children's book in one minute and the winner of each category wins a prize. In addition, groups from around campus come to perform and we have plenty of food! All proceeds go to our national philanthopy First Book to help fight illiteracy.

Arrowmont School for the Arts

Starting in 1912, the Settlement School, a school started by Pi Beta Phi, brought education to those most in need in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Shortly thereafter, Pi Phi's responsibilities for educating high school and elementary school students were transferred over to appropriate parties, so Pi Phi approached the University of Tennessee with a plan to bring instruction on the college level to Gatlinburg. A committee decided that an arts and crafts program would be the best choice for Pi Phi's contribution to the Settlement School. Each semester, our chapter donates money to the Arrowmont School of the Arts to support its efforts to educate those in need.

Links to Literacy

Pi Beta Phi selected literacy as its main focus in the 1990s. Through a program called "Links to Literacy," chapters help local agencies or schools with book distribution or one-on-one interaction as young students learn to read. Our chapter collects books throughout the fall semester and then distributes them after the holidays to local schools in the Winston-Salem area. In addition, we are heavily involved in local book fairs at the elementary schools, and we have several sisters that spend their free time tutoring.
