COMMUNITY SERVICE:

Community service remains a vital part of the Kappa Sigma tradition at Wake Forest. Among our many activities include our work with the Brian Piccolo Foundation with Hit the Bricks and Wake 'N Shake. Likewise, our brothers have participated in hurricane rebuilding activities related to Hurricane Katrina and have done work with Habitat for Humanity. Other activities have included DESK and Campus Kitchen, and we are always looking for new ways to give back! Feel free to contact Bryce Stallings if you have any suggestions!

The Mark Pruitt Run Benefiting
The MacKay Foundation for Cancer Research

   Mark C. Pruitt  Scholarship

Wake Forest University

Since the early eighties, our chapter has organized the Piccolo Run, in which brothers run in a relay from the original campus in Wake Forest, NC to today’s Reynolda Campus in Winston-Salem. After last year’s success, we will host the event under its new name, the Mark Pruitt Run for the MacKay Foundation, on April 24th. The run will begin on Thursday afternoon at the original Wake Forest campus and will end Friday, April 25th, around noon in front of Wait Chapel on the Reynolda campus.

We have chosen to support the Mark C. Pruitt Scholarship Fund and the MacKay Foundation for Cancer Research because of their relevance to our chapter and to our community.  Details on each charity are on the attached flyer.

We would greatly appreciate any donations; checks are payable to The Kappa Sigma Charity Run and can be mailed to the address below. For your convenience, you may use a PayPal account on our fraternity’s home page, http://groups.wfu.edu/Kappa-Sigma/index.html.

Photos from last years run are also available for viewing here. If you have any questions please email Mark Harbaugh at harbmd5@wfu.edu. We thank you in advance for your contribution and support.

About the MacKay Foundation

The MacKay Foundation for Cancer Research is a center for study of cancer at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Section on Hematology and Oncology. The mission of the foundation is to make a difference in the lives of the families, friends, and coworkers of those who have been touched by cancer.

The foundation is named in memory Bob MacKay, who died on the 23rd of December, 1993.  He was a man who lived by the principle that life was to be lived today. Throughout his illness, Bob was always looking after others, concerned about the feelings and welfare of those around him, both those he loved and those he didn't even know. Throughout his treatment he became a champion of the efforts for the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He devised the idea of an annual golf tournament with proceeds benefiting the Bone Marrow Transplant Research Program. Unfortunately, he died before his vision could be realized. In his memory and in respect of his wishes, a benefit tournament has been organized as well as this charity.

The foundation has little paid staff and is in great need of money.  The contributions made will be directly used toward important ongoing cancer research and ensuring that new research projects will have the funding to move forward. Last year, the foundation presented the Wake Forest School of Medicine, Section on Hematology and Oncology a check for $86,000. Since its beginnings it has raised over $700,000 benefiting bone marrow transplant and cancer research at WFUSM, Section on Hematology and Oncology.

The Mark C. Pruitt Scholarship

The Mark C. Pruitt Scholarship was established in 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Bland B. Pruitt in memory of their son, Mark, a Kappa Sigma at Wake Forest University.  Before his senior year at Wake Forest, Mark was killed in a water skiing accident.  The scholarship is for rising seniors in the Delta-Omega Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. The factors considered in awarding the scholarship are good academic standing, leadership in the fraternity and campus affairs, and high esteem by peers.
